1. Be flexible in location: Sometimes we just choose the car rental spot closest to our home. You may not want to go 50 or 60 miles to rent a vehicle, but be open to traveling a little further and shopping around. You may get a better vehicle and/or price buy opening up your options.
2. Make a list of specifics: Write down all the important things that the car MUST HAVE, including, enough seats, proper storage and CD player. Be sure to take your list with you when you pick up your car so that you can check off each thing as you look over the vehicle.
3. Pick up your car early: Pick up your car the day before or early enough that you can exchange it if it is not what you bargained for. You do not want to be stuck with a car that is not working properly or does not have the agreed upon features and not have to time to exchange it.
4. Thoroughly inspect the vehicle: Most of us just do a quick walk around and take off in our rental vehicle, but if you are taking your family on the road you should really do more. Not only check the physical condition of the vehicle, but make sure it is safe. Be sure to check the windshield wipers, lights, tire treads, spare tire & jack, seat belts and listen for any strange sounds when you start the car. Once you head off the lot with your rental car stop at a gas station and check your tire pressure as well.
